Hi I am an electrician from the UK. I am hoping to come to Winnipeg to live and work and will be applying as soon as I have enough points.

Can anyone give me any advice as a potential newcommer to Winnipeg, especially the weather. It might seem as silly question but for someone who comes from the UK were it doesnt drop below 0C the cold does concern me. How do you get through the winter, especially if you might have to work outside as I do?

Does anyone know what the construction industry is like in Winnipeg, more specifically the demand for electricians? if its anything like the UK only plumbers are in short supply.

Anyway any input will be most appreciated

Thanks

Layers, layers, and more layers. That's the key - each layer trapps a bit more. That and make sure you have good warm gloves that are flexible enough to do your work if outside.

It gets cold. It gets really cold, but it's all survivable and ok once you adjust.

NO OFFENCE TO WINNIPEGERS
It is a nice city once you get used to the weather and the smell
I traveled to winnipeg 2 years ago from Alberta, and at home we were running around in sweaters and when we got to winnipeg is was freezing cold we had to dig out the winter gear.......and maybe its cause i don't live there but i traveled with someone who used to live there.....I was warned befor hand that it smelt bad there and sure enough...It smelt better in my car that we just traveled in for 16 hrs than it did outside.......And yes it was freakin COLD..I was happy to get home and hang the winter parka back up in the closet and breath air that was fresh

Hi UK electrician!
I am from Manitoba, now living in Calgary but leaving in September after 4 years, and I have lived in London for a couple of years too.
Weather...well, it does get cold in Winnipeg. Colder than you could imagine. However, it is NOT the same cold as London. I was colder in London at -5 than I've EVER been in Manitoba. And that's honest. The cold in London goes right into your bones and hurts. The cold in Wpg goes on your skin and can freeze it, which is why you cover up! Simple! In Winnipeg you will have a big winter parka, which you put on at the end of October and take off in the Spring. There's no guess work involved! And there is a lot of snow. The houses are all centrally heated and warm. I am leaving Calgary and will eventually end up back in MB to settle. Calgary's weather is unpredictable. Yes, you can sometimes bike in December, but you also have to carry a thousand different jackets, sweaters, etc. around for the different weather that arrives every 15 mins! I will miss the Chinooks though, but that's not enough to keep me here. Also, in MB you will see the sun, unlike in the UK. Sunny days right through the wintertime. Bitterly cold sometimes, but beautifully sunny. It is so beautiful. Enough about the winter though. The summers! OH MY GOD. They are fantastic. There is nothing like a MB summer. Hot, hot, hot and a beach (without a million people on it like in England) near wherever you live! Yes, there are mosquitoes, it's true. They are a reality in MB. As for the smell in Wpg...I don't know what you're talking about, maybe you could elaborate as I've never smelled anything horrible there in all the time I lived in MB (23 years).
And the sunsets are magnificent, pure magic.
And, the people in MB are so friendly. I'm always surprised every time I go home. You'll really notice it after living in the UK for sure!
Good luck Andy! I hope you get enough points soon.
Don't listen to naysayers who say Wpg/MB has nothing to offer! I'm moving back for many good reasons...and I thought I never would.
ciao.

Smell....lol......Ok remeber I don't live in winnipeg...i was told by the person I was traveling with that winnipeg had a bad smell....Like garbage to be exact.....And sure enough It smelt like garbage.....I don't want to be rude, I come from a country home in the rocky mountains and the air is fresh all the time....I would imagine after I was there for a few days I probably wouldn't have noticed it anymore...but honestly my car that was traveled for more the 16hrs smelt better at the time then it did out side

If you smelled a bad smell in Winnipeg, you certainly must have been near a city dump. I have travelled and lived in a lot of Canadian cities, the one of many things that is beautiful about Winnipeg is that it is more like a country town. The smell is clear and fresh, you can always see the stars. I live here now and after having lived in a few Canadian cities and towns, both east and west, I wouldn't be anywhere else. Yes, it can get cold, but you dress and you are warm. There is nothing like the Manitoba sun you get during the winters and the endless sea of beautiful white snow. Or perhaps you are just not used to a city that does not smell of smog.

thats funny....not used to a city that doesn't smell like smog.I know the difference between eye burning lung hurting smell of smog and the smell of garbage. And to be exact I wasn't near the city dump either. There was no wind blowing that day. I am not saying that winnipeg is a bad place. To me its no different then any other city. Noisey, crowded, etc........ Alls i said was it smelt like garbage and that if i had spent more that a couple of days there i probably would have got used to the rotten smell and didn't notice it any more.
