Hi there, there's a place in the North East Called Viper, and they carry American Sattelite. I think overall it's cheaper. And you get tonnes of channels.

I want to watch TV not become a criminal.

Everyone I know thinks that Direct TV is by far the best choice. But I don't want the hassel of fighting to keep my system working. All in the name of Entertainment. I like alot of Canadian Shows anyway.

There seem to be a number of people in Calgary and elsewhere who
import DSS and DirecTV systems to Canada. They sell them in
Canada on an as-is basis, and those I have talked to claim the sale
and installation (and use) of these systems in Canada is not illegal for
them. It is not legal for the American satellite operators to solicit or
sell systems across the border to users, as this jurisdiction has been
awarded to Bell ExpressVu and StarChoice.
These operators offer full-service cards for the receivers, which
provide all the movie and Pay-per-View channels (they say) to us here
at no extra cost. The catch is that the cards are blocked, jammed, or
"looped" from time to time, rendering them unusable until they are
reprogrammed. for a fee, of course.
Two things bother me about the situation:
1) The operators/vendors have the opportunity to program the cards
with time limits or cutoffs at random, and the buyer is essentially at
their mercy; and
2) If the sale of these systems is not illegal in Canada, why are these
people so secretive about their activities? It is difficult to see a system,
and you can only talk to most of them on the phone until, it seems,
thay feel you are a legitimate customer.
Another consideration for the American system purchaser is the
reception of local channels. You can't get local news from the dish,
but must add an antenna of some kind for channels 2, 4, 5, 9, and 16.
You will also need an A-B switch, to go from local to dish feeds.
As attractive as are all the movies, HBO, sports, and so on, that are on the
US dishes, you must decide if the hassles are worth it. I'm still not sure.
In the meantime, I've got a digital cable box, which gives me some of
the features of StarChoice/Bell, and a slightly lower cable bill.

Can any of these systems give me an internet connection? I'm talking about using only the satellite system ... no cable ... no phone line.

AFAIK, none of the current systems, US or Canadian, has the uplink or
downlink capacity to offer wireless internet service. I believe this is a
future enhancement, but is not possible right now. Perhaps someone
out there can clarify this and explain in layman's terms why it is so.
Meanwhile, I am awaiting the results of a court case agasinst a B.C.
man who is fighting to keep his American service. It is hard to find any
reports on the case, so it may have ended without my hearing about
it. One possible result of the case is a definitive, although not likely
precedent-setting (in legal terms), statement of the legality of the
reception of the spill-over signals from US sservice providers.

I was wondering how our government and the CRTC put the mapleleaf on the microwaves that hit us every day from space so that we will know that it is the only information that we as canadians should be allowed.....THEFT BY TAXATION!!

I think that direct TV is the way to go. Seems like we all have a computer here...why dont you all pitch in in buying a card cleaner and programmer...I have one and I haven't paid for programming in over a year. Who care's what the government say's bout pirating or whatever...it's no different than tuning into a radio station from europe.

Hey
Just don't get "Starchoice" as their's customer service sucks & they love to hang up on people instead of answering questions.

Hey Sean,

I Got Bell ExpressVu last October and has been very satisfying.
I pay about 40 bucks a month and get TONS of channels. For 20 bucks more you can get all the movie channels but I found that package is not really worth it. There are also pay-per-view movies all the time, and even ADULT PPV, So u can now just order up a movie of your choice and not have to go rent them if u dont want 2. I was thinking of getting DTV (from the states) but as ppl have said above, it can be a royal pain in the ass sometimes as they are always sending out updates to nullify the Hu Card, so you have to take it and get it programmed again and again (not free). And lets not get into "BLACK SUNDAY", they F' d up millions of cards and most ppl were down for a really long time.

For the price I pay, Bell is way better than cable, way more channels.
Check out a few flyers, they usually have deals on: I got mine at radioshack for 170 bucks, BUT with that deal you get over 120 bucks in programming rebates, so the actual system and dish works out to about 50 bucks in the end. I think now they have deals that include 2 recievers so you can hook 2 rooms up with the dish as well.

Hope this helps you decide.
I luv mah Bell Dish surprized!)
