Hi all first post here.

Being in the Condo business I am constantly chasing these sales people out of our properties. They are always looking for the easy mark and many on here sound way too easy.

Never give a stranger any document that comes to your door it's asking for trouble.

Has no one on here read the news papers the last five years. There have been numerous warnings about any discounter Gas' Hydro coming door to door .

Recently had one at my door for hydro followed 20 minutes later by a Gas guy. I thought this is way to suspicious so decided to jump in my car. They were working together hitting many houses and soon had me in tow.

I told them you misrepresented yourself to me so I am going to follow you for a bit.

Meanwhile I had already called London Police who were on their way. When the cop arrived I walked back down the street to meet him explaining what they were doing.

He the Cop went up into the circle calling them over. They finally left our area right after and now I watch for them all the time.

Letters to the Editor are great way of warning Seniors never to sign anything at their door. The Utilities have done a good job in taking out full page ads stating they do not send reps door to door in any area.

And finally, the bunch that got signed up at our south Condominium I have helped get out of 9 contracts. We have threatened serious crap on them if any of these people get jacked with their bills.

If I can help any on here drop me a line and I'll see what I can do for ya. Remember 90% of these clowns have no education and have received the positions from classified ads.

They also probably hate the job.

Hello Nadjam

What process you followed after geting the cancellation confirmation # in e-mail?
Is that all end or have request for another formal cancellation letter. Advice please.

quoting: nadjam
to snrdrummer....Call them immediately! Tell them you don't want to go with their company, and ask them for a cancellation number. It's good that you didn't get a call from them, however, I would cover all bases, and call them, write to them, fax them, e-mail them, etc. My only question to you, is did they call and speak to anyone else your household? The impression I get is that it doesn't matter who answers the phone and talks to them. As long as they get a phone verification, they deem that as you agreeing to the contract. So, again, don't hesitate, call, fax, e-mail, phone as soon as you can!
Good Luck and keep us posted on this forum!

What further steps you took after geting the cancellation number? Will they still try to get you after that?

quoting: pplflduser
I sent them an email a couple of days ago because it's been a month since they sent me an email saying they will be sending a cancellation letter within 5-15 business days.

I got a response last night with that EXACT SAME email they sent last month (did they forget to send me the letter last month??!). So I told them that I want an actual response of CONFIRMATION that they sent it out, not a stupid duplicate of a previous email, and that I would take further action if it is further delayed. I guess I will call them tomorrow.

This was their email, probably just copied and pasted by one of their idiotic staff:
(This was the response to my message asking for a confirmation that the cancellation letter was sent to me)

====

Thank you for writing to Universal Energy Corporation. We have received and submitted your cancellation request to our Customer Relations Department. A response will be sent to you via post mail within 5-15 business days.

Please refer to Section 13 of the Electricity Agreement Terms and Conditions for information relating to Early Termination Charges.

(contact info followed)

Hello Rhinemine,
After I received my cancellation number, I watched my Enbridge bill every month to make sure they were never represented on my bill. Also, they sent me back my original gas bill that I had given to them (yes, yes, I know, I should never have given it to them!).

This is the text from the first e-mail they sent to me when I cancelled. Note they indicate it may take 1-2 cycles to remove them from my bill? (still makes me mad...in the end, however, I never saw anything)

Mrs. **********,

Thank you for writing to Universal Energy Corporation. Please be advised that we are currently in the process of cancelling agreement # **********.

As of June 8, 2007, a cancellation request was submitted to Enbridge and it may take 1 to 2 billing cycles for Universal Charges to be removed from your bill.

If you have additional inquiries or require further assistance, please contact our Customer Service Department toll free at 1-866-900-2373 Mon-Fri 9am-9pm and Weekends 10am-6pm EST.

This is the text from the 2nd e-mail they sent me on June 11th/07. I had copied Enbridge and the Ombudsman, as I wanted to be absolutely sure they weren't able to switch me over:

"Mrs. *****,

Thank you for writing to Universal Energy Corporation. Please be advised that we received you request to cancel agreement #************.

As of June 8, 2007, your cancellation request was processed. Since the cancellation was within the 10-day cooling period it was not necessary to submit any information to Enbridge, as indicated in the previous email reply.

If you have additional inquiries or require further assistance, please contact our Customer Service Department toll free at 1-866-900-2373 Mon-Fri 9am-9pm and Weekends 10am-6pm EST.

Customer Service Department
Universal Energy Corporation
Toll Free: 1-866-900-2373
Email: customerservice@universalenergy.ca

After this exchange, I did get an actual cancellation letter from them, in addition to the gas bill I mentioned above. I still check my bills today.

Good Luck.

WOW - Universal Energy came visiting again last night. Amazing how persistent these people are! Fortunately, for me, I wasn't home, and unfortunately for my husband, he was. They tried again to get us to sign up, and my husband just looked at them point blank and said NO WAY! Hubby explained that UE's prices were waaaaay too high (not to mention the fee to get out of the contract!) and that we almost got caught in their plan once before. They actually told him that it must have been their older savings plan, and that if we signed up now, all we would have to do is watch the energy prices, and phone them for a reduction every time the prices went down. HAH! is what I say! After much back and forth, my hubby sent them packing. He talked to them for way too long. I would have slammed the door in their faces and told them I would call the police if they didn't move their butts off my property! In the end, we know better and regardless of whether my husband was just up for some harmless banter, and haranguing of them, they went on their merry way, one less customer.

I am so glad I didnt take this job. I saw in the newspaper, I live in metro detroit, it said 25/hr$ gas registration agent. I called and they told me to come in for an interview. There were 50 people there. 20 people were called out and didnt pass the initial backround check, I thought it was a good company, than they started handing us papers to sign even though we didnt get our interview yet, one paper said stuff like dont walk on peoples lawn, dont go inside somones house, ect...than at the bottom it said dont talk to the media, wow, red flag, the next paper they gave us to sign said we were self imployed contracters and we dont work for the company,(they kept saying we are being hired for universal) than the next paper if u sign it gave them permission to use your signature and a photo copy of your i.d to use as they please, everyone around me signed the papers, i talked to the person running it, he brought me to his office closed the door and i confronted him, "is this job hourly or commision" he kept saying the base is 25/hr and finally said its commision, u get 35$ per costumer u sign up, i said i was leaving and he wouldnt let me take the papers he tried to get me to sign so i gave them back, but they trick these poor people that dont have work, and they tell the workers the same thing that they tell the potential custos. How do the workers know what goes on behind closed doors so please remember this, they trick everyone. I cant beleive they said to sign the paper and not talk to the media, red flags everywhere, I would never work for a company like this, and never door to door, terrible company.

hey everyone:

i'm still trying to figure out if my situation is the scam it seems to be, as i have all the same things happening for me (door to door canvasser, quardrupled energy bills, etc.), except for two things: 1) my possible scammer is Ontario Energy Savings L.P. and 2) my bills have quadrupled because my usage has APPARENTLY quadrupled, though there has been no drastic lifestyle/energy consumption change over the past few months other than Toronto winter. i'm just wondering how your all's bills have increased drastically: is it price per usage unit, or the usage, or both? thanks a lot.

Hi there,
can anyone help me and let me know if there is a way to get out of the contract with Universal Power? I am a student and unknowingly I locked myself into Universal Power's contract for 5 years. Now that school is almost over our household is trying to cancel the account because everyone is moving out. However, I found out that if I want to cancel the account I have to pay $1200 dollars and if I dont then my credit rating will get screwed up. Is that true?? Can Universal Power actually screw up ones credit rating? I dont work and have no means of paying that amount, but my credit rating is pretty good and i dont want to destroy it..Can anyone give me an answer..
Thanks in advance

READ YOUR CONTRACT.........IT SAYS IF YOU ARE MOVING SOMEWHERE WHERE THEY CAN'T SUPPLY POWER THEN THEY WILL CACELL...... SO MOVE BACK HOME WITH MOM AND DAD! THAT SHOULD WORK. MAKE SURE WHEN YOU CALL, DOCUMENT WHO YOU SPOKE TO (ID #), TIME.......... AND EXPLAIN AND ASK IF THERE WILL BE ANY FEES TO CANCEL....... FOR SURE THEY WILL SAY NO.... SAY THANK YOU...... AND ABOUT 2 WEEKS LATER, YOU WILL RECEIVE A NOTICE IN THE MAIL SAYING YOU OWE A CRAP LOAD OF MONEY........ YOU WILL THEN NEED TO WRITE THEM A LETTER EXPLAINING THAT YOU DON'T NEED THERE SERVICES ANYMORE AS YOU ARE MOVING IN WITH MOMMMY AND DADDY....YOU MIGHT HAVE TO GIVE ADDRESS..... AND SAY DO NOT CONTACT YOU ANYMORE AS THIS WILL BE CONSIDERED TO BE HARRASSEMENT......
GOOD LUCK

nadjam - You seem to know a lot about this...hope you can help...

I too have fallen victim to this scam. The hydro is in my financee's name and I just signed as I thought this was just an application (she was away). To make a long story short...the Ontario Energy Savings rep came to my door last night (around 7-8pm). That night I emailed the company stating I wanted to cancel. This morning I also faxed them the same letter stating my desire to cancel my application. I also called them this morning, and lucky enough, got a cancellation number. My plan tonight is to ship a letter (with cancellation #) reaffirming my desire to cancel. I will be sending this letter via registered mail and courrier. I will state in this letter that I wish writting confirmation of my cancellation. With the letters and fax, I also send them a photocopied version of the application/agreement to ensure they cancel the correct appliction.

I'll also resend an email and fax with the cancellation number.

nadjam...Do you believe I have covered all areas? You are a success story and I'd also like to be one. I believe I have acted fast and I hope this will save me. I thank you for any possible information anyone could provide. Many thanks

Hi ontarioenergysavingsmya$$:

I agree - I am a success story, however, I don't know that I have all the answers! It certainly sounds like you have covered all the bases. I was going to send Universal Energy a registered letter, and if I recall, I never ended up sending it. (just got too busy at work that week). I recall faxing it in, but never got around to actually mailing by registered mail. I think if you have the cancellation number, you are good to go. In the end, it wouldn't hurt to send by registered mail or courier (probably one or the other, not both). When this all happened to me, I sent my e-mail on day 9 (in the evening, after business hours!), not day 2 like you are doing - I was really concerned that if I hit day 10, I would be locked in. In the end, I was okay.

Good luck, and keep us posted on how it goes.

Now I'm a little worried. I called again tonight to reaffirm my cancellation. The girl on the other end of the line informed me that my account was cancelled. I informed her that I had a cancellation number (from the first time I called) as well and she stated that that cancellation number is only the id number of the first guy I talked to. I asked to have written confirmation of my account being cancelled and she said that they don't do that....I'm a little concerned that something fishy is up...but she did state that the account was cancelled and that conversation is recorded...so I hope I'm good.

Yes...the girl I talked to last night indicated that they received a letter and fax from me stating to cancel my application...I'd just sleep easier at night knowing I had proof of this cancellation....

This happened to me last Sunday. Guy shows up and says "on behalf of my provider" even shows me a bill that is from the same company I used. Hands me a regristation letter, I sign not knowing because he made it sound like he is confirming that my prices won't go up.

I then sent them a fax the same day indicating I did not want it. I also send them a register letter, email and called them saying I am not interested. I also said that I am recording the conversation . This is all within 7 days..I get the cooling off period..which is still not over.

I hope I am in the clear?

You haven't heard from me in a while; you probably thought I was busy working three jobs and/or selling my internal organs in order to pay for some exorbitant Early Termination Fees, right?

Well, guess what? I got out.

After many, many, many months of Universal Power's objectionable tactics, duplicate e-mail responses and tedious form letters from “Nino Silvestri” (does this guy actually exist? David Menzies doesn't think so, either)…

http://www.marketingmag.ca/magazine/current/letters_to_editor/article.jsp?content=20071029_70462_70462#

It's over.

Just like I said it would be.

Universal Power made a mistake with me (besides underestimating my tenacity), and they may have made the same mistake with some of you. Their mistake? They didn't send me a written copy of the Terms and Conditions Agreement.

Read on…

After being a Universal victim for seven months, I realized that I hadn't been provided with any sort of paperwork from Universal, which I found strange. I e-mailed them, explaining, and requesting a copy. First they told me that the rep that came to my door would have left me a copy when he signed me up, but he hadn't. Then, they told me that the written agreement was on the back of the Application that I'd signed at the door, but it wasn't. I still had the signed Application; it was blank on the back. Nice try, though.

Once the Terms and Conditions Agreement arrived in the mail, I read through it carefully. Section 17 states: “…this Agreement will cease to have effect unless Universal delivers to you, a written copy of this Agreement within 40 days after you sign it, and unless you reaffirm…”

Furthermore, Section 18, Your Rights under the Consumer Protection Act, states: “You may cancel this agreement at any time during the period that ends ten (10) days after the day you receive a written copy of the agreement. You do not need to give the supplier a reason for cancelling during this 10-day period.”

Regardless of whether or not I had reaffirmed the Agreement by phone, I hadn't been given a copy of the Terms and Conditions Agreement at the door, and none was sent by mail afterward (within 40 days or otherwise), and when I finally did get my copy, I cancelled within the 10-day period after receiving it. Just like it says in Universal's own Agreement.

My argument was that since the written copy wasn't sent to me, the Agreement ceased to be in effect. Barring that, I was still within my 10-day period after receipt of the written copy. Either way, the Agreement was cancelled.

Naturally, Universal Power dismissed my letters and e-mails, choosing to reply only with repetitious form letters and irrelevant, badly-written e-mail responses, probably meant to frustrate me. It was annoying, but I didn't give in. I responded calmly but firmly, in fastidious detail, keeping track of, and noting, everything.

It became obvious that Universal Power meant to be obtuse, so I began looking for outside assistance in dealing with my situation. When Hydro One couldn't/wouldn't do anything for me, I contacted the OEB.

http://www.oeb.gov.on.ca/

When the OEB seemed indifferent, I even wrote to Silverman Helps and to Pat Foran at CTV; they didn't respond.

Then, I sent a report to the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services.

http://www.gov.on.ca/mgs/en/ConsProt/STEL02_045922.html

…perhaps it was just the timing, but after getting in touch with the Ministry, the OEB seemed to have a renewed interest in my case; this time though, the response came from a higher-up representative than the ones I'd dealt with previously.

I am currently in my third month of Universal-Free hydro billing. Each month, when I tear open that bill, my eyes fall to the electricity supply line, and I breathe a sigh of relief.

…and I smile, knowing I've been vindicated.

After going through this maddening episode, I have three pieces of advice to offer in dealing with these types of situations:

Keep detailed records. Any contact you have with Universal, put it in writing. Get their responses in writing. If they call you, refuse to speak to them by phone; tell them you wish to communicate by mail or e-mail. Save every letter and message.

Keep pressing Universal. Don't accept form letters, and don't accept ill-informed, useless e-mail replies from lackeys. Make your point, then make it again, and pursue it. Persist. If they don't answer your questions, ask them again, and keep asking. Don't give up; that's what they want.

Keep asking for help from outside organizations, even when things seem bleak – you never know what may trigger a response from a consumer advocate or watchdog agency.

Following are some related websites/forums/blogs, etc. that I hope will be found useful, in keeping with your situations. Some of them are a little dated, but you will see that Universal is running their little game all across the country, and has pulled the wool over the eyes of all manner of unsuspecting consumers. If nothing else, some of the blogs and posts are wildly funny:
