I fell into the UE trap. I was asked to show some bills so they could provide me with a competitive rate. Then I was asked to sign indicating that my address was assessed for a new rate. Little did I know I signed a 5 year contract and had given them all they info they needed to lock me in. The bills weren't even in my name they were in my husbands.

Funny enough I make this huge change yet I wasn't even able to communicate with hydro since I wasn't on the bill. Needless to say my husband was furious, with me, with UE, with everyone!

We followed some internet advise to change the name on the bill. UE called us for about 2 weeks and now a collection agency is calling wanting over $1500.

Is there anyway to deal with a collection agency? They have mentioned court. My husband wants to avoid them.

hello it's April 17 2009 and I got a door to door hydro sales person at my door today. I don't remember the name of the company. I just listen to thenguy for a bit and then asked him if there was a number I could call to sign up. He said he could do it right there. I said I am not signing an application from someone who just shows up at my door, can' t i just call the company? He said no. I said, you don't have a phone number? he said no. I said sorry then, that is not anyway to do business and closed the door.

asking to get a number so you can call them is the best way to go.

He couldn't even speak english that clearly, when he called the way he worded things was affirmation. To me that means they're confirming the info on my application, in actuality when you answer 'yes' to those questions that's where they get you and it's all recorded. You just entered into the 5 yr contract with them. When I spoke to Vanessa (one of the head biatch at Universal) she basically played that recording to me and I'm thinking to myself (you bastards) that was very clever the way I was conned into this contract. Anyways, she told me if I want to get out of the contract I would have to pay roughly $500+. At this point I realized the argument was fruitless so I hung up and immediately contact my lawyer.

The court date is set in May for a prelimary hearing. My lawyer said I can have up to 15 witnesses who's been conned the same way I have. I'm going to take them down and I'm also thinking about a class action suit against them. If you're in the Windsor area or close by and would like to be a witness please let me know, right now it's just a small claims court. I will keep everyone posted on the outcome.

ye splz contact me about class action case, i had my hydro cut off 2 times in the winter and i had a 3 month old and it was a hole weekend. second time my place flooded in the winter with a new baby and when u woke up it was so cold......i have damage costs now and have to move out of my 1 bedroom with a baby all beacuse they charge me 160 a month and im on maternaty leave nikkibabe_account@yahoo.ca. I will win . my baby's life could have been taken that night (i already tried several times to explian that i was going to have to cancell previous to these insidents because i couldnt afford to feed me and the bay and the the ppl at universal had no mercy......)

I recently read that Universal Energy is changing their name to "Just Energy", know I heard this on the radio so I don't know if it "just Energy" or really just "Energy" I wouldn't put it past those blood suckers to change their name to just "Energy" so that they can continue to conseal their decietful scam. I believe that "Universal Energy Corporation" have gotton so much bad publicity over the web that it's all coming back to haunt them and they need to change their name. If you've been ripped off by these people make sure to file a complaint with the Ontario Energy Board, The Ontario Consumers Board, call your member of parliment and complain about them. When I called Universal Energy office to complain, their automated service answered the phone as "Just Energy, formerly known as Universal Energy".
I have filed a complaint with the OEB as UE changed my service without my consent.
In January, a guy came to the door saying he was from Hydro giving smartmeter refunds. I showed him my bill, but when he asked me to sign something and wouldn't let me see what the paper was, I refused. The paper didn't have the Hydro logo on it, so I got suspicious. This guy got aggressive and actually took off with my Hydro bill. Since I never heard anything about it, I thought I was safe. Until I got my June Hydro bill stating that my provider had changed to Universal Energy! I called UE to complain but they said they had a contract with my signature on it, and a recorded telephone call affirmation with me!! I told them this was forgery but they refused to listen to me. After many phone call complaints, I got a copy of this contract and the recorded phone call (which they must legally provide to you upon request). It was not my signature on the contract, and not my phone number & email address on the contract. So even the telephone call was faked!!
I cannot believe how sleazy this company is! How are they allowed to operate like this? Why are they allowed to operate without even having to check for proper authorization?? They just assume it's my signature and even my proper telephone number to be able to switch my service like that??? And my hydro bill from UE is more expensive than my regular hydro bill.
I am currently waiting for the OEB to do its investigation of forgery.
I have posted warning signs in my apartment building advising all residents to be aware of this scam with UE door to door salespeople.
