I can't believe it, but I signed two forms when the guy came up at the door, with a bunch of hydro bills that other customers gave him. He just kept convincing me that I would get a 22% discount.

As luck would have it, I checked the terms after he left and realized that it might be a trick. Immediately I ran out and found the guy in the lobby. I requested taking back the forms I signed and told him we need to think twice before we could commit. He said that it wouldn't be completed after they call us to confirm, but I insisted and got back the forms I signed.

Am I safe? Maybe I still have to keep an eye on the bills for the coming months.

WOW... here I am still uspset over the fact that I had to pay over $800 in early cancelation fees less then 5 months ago. Yesterday, guess who was knocking at my door........... an agent from Universal energy. He was so lucky that I was not home and my wife was the one who opened the door. She said he was really pushy and she had to repeat 3 times "NO THANK YOU, Pleaese leave!". I must say that my wife was really nice about it and I said I am coming home to teach him a lesson and she reminded me that it's not his fault..............and she was right!

REMEBER.............. SAY NO TO UNIVERSAL ENERGY IF YOU WANT TO SAVE MONEY!
twisted! twisted! rolling eyes!

We also got taken by the UEC crooks and also by Summitt Energy who are a sloppy version of UEC from my experience. I've actually stopped paying the bills until this is resolved but sadly I don't know if I have a legal leg to stand on as they've sent me copies of the reaffirmation calls. As others here noted these are cleverly worded to get you to commit to the five year contracts whereas you think you are confirming the sales agent gave you all the right information at the door. Now I'm looking at paying to cancel collectively four (hydro & gas x2) contracts my spouse unwittingly signed us up for. I was considering legal action but given what others have written it sounds like a waste of time (and money). Are there any tactics one can use in the law suit that would make the likes of these crooks settle at the 11th hour? I'm thinking to subpoena everyone at UEC I can attach a name to. Some of which I'm sure are no longer in their employ and wouldn't even show up to court. This tactic seemed to work when I fought an HTA charge years ago. I'm not a lawyer so I don't know how realistic this would be.

Ihatescammers,

I too only signed an application. I made sure to keep all of the paperwork given to me by the charming salesman (who also said he wasn't a salesman). I got a telephone confirmation but no hardcopy contract was ever sent to me. The manipulation came in the form of scare tactics delivered in a 'don't worry..we are here to protect you' dialogue. The literature handed to me had inflammatory headlines from media sources such as the Toronto Sun's article "Hydro Will be Hell to Pay" (July 22, 2005) followed by The Globe and Mail's article "Gas and hyrdro rates set to soar." (September 16, 2005)
I know I was scammed and I can only warn others to avoid these 'companies' at any cost. I just spent an hour calling and complaining to Hydro and UP and have gotten nowhere AGAIN. UP wants an official letter of cancellation to which the customer service rep was very well versed on what was to be contained in that letter. I can bet she has to tell that story several times per shift. I asked her how much it would cost to buy out my contract. She said she could not say. I told her the last rep I called a few months ago told me it would cost $700 but that it was negotiable. Obviously the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. My hydro bills have doubled since I signed on. Currently, Hydro rates are set at 5.3 cents/kWh..UP..fixed at 9.59 for me.
For people like myself who do not need to consider long term as I move every few years, this is a bad deal from top to bottom. I am considering seeking legal advice once I get a response (was told 5-15 business days which ropes us in for another bill) to my letter requesting a dollar amount should I cancel.
I am so angry at myself for being lead on. I should know better. As I take some responsibility for my actions, I will not take responsibility for how it was that I was lead on. Universal Power needs to be stopped. These companies have zero scrupples. They want your money and will do everything to get it. Oh..and if you are thinking that you can just switch the hydro bill into someone elses name to kill your UP contract, well..not so fast. If the new account holder has not held an account with Hydro in the last 2 years, they will have to pay $562.00 deposit (refundable after 12 months if payment history is perfect) plus another $30.00 set up fee. Universal Power knows this and this is why they charge what they do for cancellation. They assume that since the costs will be similar to make the change that most people will avoid cancelling.
I can go on for hours but I am certain you are hearing nothing new. Thanks for your time.

This is not a scam!!!! This is YOU not educating yourself!

They sell hydro at 9.9 ckwh and they make it sound like it's the best thing since Pamela Anderson............. and usually we bite like I did!

Here are some facts that I should of looked into before doing this and confirm

http://www.tbhydro.on.ca/pages/residential/rates.htm

Rates effective May 1, 2007
Electricity Charges
This is the cost of electricity supplied to you. The electricity used is multiplied by the adjustment factor (4.57%), which accounts for electricity lost through wires and equipment before it gets to your home.

5.3 cents/kWh for first 600 kWh* used monthly
6.2 cents/kWh on all remaining 1,000 kWh monthly

so, what is going on with the letter??? I bet not much! My lawyer looked at my contract and said......... you signed, you confirmed.... you are stuck. twisted!

This is why I take time out of my day to educate people about this. They were in my NEIGHBOURHOOD yesterday and I was talking to someone who they approached. They really do mislead people but again......... if you do any kind of research, you will see that there is NO benefit of signing up for this "service".

I am in the same boat as everyone else. I signed up last year with them, and now every two months i am gettin a disconnection letter because my bills are so high. Just last week we were having dinner and they came to the door, we told them that they are a scam and we were told that the was not true. that in the end we would see how much we have saved. I asked the end of what my life. Since living in a two bedroom townhouse cost almost 360.00 a month. every month i look at my bill and universal energy has charged my always over 100.00 for there service. My husband and i have tryed so hard to cancel with them and they tell us they want our pay stubs and birth certificates and a telephone bill. I dont give any of that to anyone so i dont know why they would ask for it that is my personal information. Some people just dont have a care in the world about other people. Lets fight together to get universal energy SHUT DOOWN.

They will never get shut down........... they are in it to make money and like they did with me ($831) cancelation fee.......... they will keep knocking at doors until everyone says no! But they still get suckers like me and you. You have 2 options: option 1: Pay out the remainder of your term.....
or option 2: This is from a Vancouver forum

OK, I called the Ontario Energy Board and they gave me specific questions to ask Universal Energy. You have to send a registered letter or fax (keep the transmittal showing date/time it was sent) and Universal Energy has 35 days (not business days) to respond.

Tell them you have contacted the OEB and ask them for:

1. A copy of the signed contract and to point out the calculation of the penalty clause. Ask them to calculate the penalty to get out of the contract as per the terms and conditions.

2. Ask them for a copy of the telephone call where you verbally confirmed your agreement. This cannot be a paper copy, but must be a CD of the actual conversation.

They have 35 days to respond and if they don't respond in this time frame, call the OEB back who will intervene.

Good luck to all.

The fags at Universal Energy wait until the last minute before they respond to your request for information, thus ensuring you pay yet another month of their rip-off rates. I was able to get out of an agreement by virtue of the fact that they stale dated their bullshit contract thus rendering the reaffirmation call invalid as it happened before the 10 day minimum waiting period. Check the dates on yours. In my case the house was empty on the date of the "signing". We could have proved it but thankfully didn't have to.

I have also been totally scammed by Universal Power. The man that came to my door in the summer of 2006, seemed very persuasive, wanting to come have a seat at my kitchen table and explain what a great deal he has for me, and that I would be a "FOOL"(that was his exact words were) I would be if didn't sign up. I was busy with my girls...so I just said..Yes..whatever....sign me up. I didn't think anything of it...and got the call 10 days later to confirm...which I confirmed. I think at the time I was a little hesitant, however, I had signed up with Direct Energy for my gas...and have had no problems, so I thought I was doing a good thing. That was until the budget on my hydro bill kept going up every 2 months...and I received my anniversary bill from hydro stating that I owed $1000.00 over and above my budget. I was like "WHAT?!?!?" Anyways...started doing some investigating,,,turns out that I have been paying 9.59 cents since I signed up. My budget every month isn't even close to what I should be paying....which is why I had a huge bill for my anniversary month. My husband was freaking out...as he didn't even now I signed the contract...again...thought it was an OK thing?!?! I'm an idiot!!
Huge, costly fix...as I called them...of course, they couldn't put me through to anyone who could help...they said I should write a letter requesting my cancellation and they would return a letter stating how much it would cost to settle. So,,,a MONTH after I sent my letter, I got a letter back stating it would cost me $600+ to get out of my contract as they had already purchased 5 years worth of hydro on my behalf. What a CROCK!!!! I hate these bastards! Just who the hell do they think they are.....LOVE to meet the president of this company...living in his mansion on all of our cancellation fees!! ASS!!!! twisted!
I did contact a lawyer and he told me that because I confirmed the phone call, I was basically *#@! out of luck!
Anyhow...after reading all of your posts...I decided it was well worth my while to pay the damn cancellation fee...I just mailed it out today.
So, with the cost of the anniversary $1000K and the cost of buying out my contract...I have spent what I person would on regular hydro for a whole year!! rolling eyes!
This company needs to be stopped!! I have warned everyone in my small community of the HUGE mistake I made...and I am writing to my local newspaper warning everyone what people like ourselves have had to deal with. What a costly mistake I have made.....I will NEVER sign with anyone again!!!!
Cheers!
exclaimation!

NEW WAY TO GET SUCKED IN!!!!

I received a check in the mail for $100.00. If I endorse it, I am "comited to the contract". WOW... can you imagine how many desperate people are getting sucked in.
What really pisses me off the most is HOW DID THEY GET MY NAME AND ADDRESS! Are they paying my local gas company for this information?

What will they do next? Sign up and get free beer............. or a blow job!

Sorry, I am a tad pissed off especially after I paid $831 in early termination fees from this retarded company!

Keep educating yourself!

I'm another one that was scammed.

Maybe it's time for a class action law suit against this company, if our premier and OEB are not doing anything about this.

Same story here with Energy Savings in Ontario...hydro bills doubled...they told me that maybe something was wrong with my meter...$720 cancellation fee....six kids; not an easy amount to come up with but neither are double hydro bills...

I told the lady on the phone that I do not know how someone could stay employed for a company like that??? Of course, she did not answer that one...it is sad. How do they sleep???

Just waiting now for some letter to come in the mail from them for the cancellation fee...has anyone had any luck not paying it? Something really needs to be done about this...

You can try this..................

call and inform them you are moving to a house that is "all inclusive". Something like with your parents: ask them if there is anything you must do. Then wait about 1 month then cancell your hydro bill. Put it into somebody else name. About 2-3 weeks after this happens, they will send you a notice of "early termination". Fax it back with a letter stating you want your contract cancelled and according to the rules on your contract it can be cancelled if you can't supply the hydro as it's not in your name. Mentioned that you called "last month" to inform them of the change and remind them that they record it all. Then say at the end: Again, please cancell my contract # xxxxxx and do not contact me again as I will be in contact with the OBE.

Try this........ might help........ worst that can happen is you pay the cancelation fee........

Look back in the posts and someone posted steps you can take to get them to send you the information ...........

good luck.......

Universal also scammed/tricked/conned me into signing their contract. I was approached by one of Universal's minion in April 2006, claiming to save me money on my utilities bill. To keep this short, most of us that got conned in signing the contract are familiar with their unethical tactics, that's why we're all posting here. So, I won't go in details.

The day I found out they switched me over without my authorization. I flipped and immediately contacted them. It took a couple of days and hours on the phone for me to get the manager as I was persistent. Bascially, they told me the verbal affirmation of the application was the contract when one of their rep called me and interrupted my dinner. He couldn't even speak english that clearly, when he called the way he worded things was affirmation. To me that means they're confirming the info on my application, in actuality when you answer 'yes' to those questions that's where they get you and it's all recorded. You just entered into the 5 yr contract with them. When I spoke to Vanessa (one of the head biatch at Universal) she basically played that recording to me and I'm thinking to myself (you bastards) that was very clever the way I was conned into this contract. Anyways, she told me if I want to get out of the contract I would have to pay roughly $500+. At this point I realized the argument was fruitless so I hung up and immediately contact my lawyer.

The court date is set in May for a prelimary hearing. My lawyer said I can have up to 15 witnesses who's been conned the same way I have. I'm going to take them down and I'm also thinking about a class action suit against them. If you're in the Windsor area or close by and would like to be a witness please let me know, right now it's just a small claims court. I will keep everyone posted on the outcome.
