Hey Everyone! From Halifax NS here. 33 yr. old full time Dad. Have a 3 and a half year old son. Anyone with children that want to go for coffee sometime or for children to have some new friends. I don't know many people here in Calgary and could use a babysitter as well as company.
I am in the SouthWest area.

Just moved here from Newfoundland. We are both 49, love playing traditional and blues music with guitars, harmonicas, and mandolin. Don't let the grandma fool you. Both of us are very young at heart!! We also have no friends here as yet and would like to connect with other instrument playing people who are flexible and love jam sessions and get togethers.

Hello everybody,

Our family - my husband + me + our little son just moved in Calgary. It's a great city but we don't have any friends here yet. I am looking for girlfriends with a child who are older than 25 and enjoy good books, theatre, nature. We live in NW.
If you are interested, please, write me back at itorr@shaw.ca.

Well I lived in Airdrie for a number of years, moved to Calgary a year ago. I know lots of people, but don't really consider many of them to be friends. Don't have much in common with them I guess, I'm just in my early 20's but not in to the bar scene. More in to books, walking/hiking, art (visual/audio etc, creating/observing), live music, weekend trips etc. I don't have kids but I love hanging out with them! So I'm interested in hanging out with people of any age, as long as they are fun! Please msg me back if you like fun too

Hey Emm713,

I'm not there yet but will be in Calgary in July (assuming all goes well). I too am into more outdoorsy stuff than I am the bar scene and would love to have someone to discover Calgary and the area with once I arrive. I'll do my best to keep in touch here until I arrive.

I am looking for apartments in SW Calgary, and there are several available but mostly in Bankview. Do you know if it is a decent area to live or is it more of a "bad area"? I don't want to end up moving directly into a high crime or bad area!

I appreciate your help and hope we can hang out some time after July 1st!

Hi all.....

I am moving to Calgary from Vancouver in two weeks and will be in the same boat you are in.

The worst is I have one weekend to find an apartment to rent - and I'd like something close to D/T. Preferably a 2bdr....

Problem is I have a cat - who is wonderful but somehow makes it harder to find a good rental property.

Any ideas???

There seems to be a real shortage of places online...

Hello Goingwest. Bankview is quite a nice area of town, it's fairly old so the trees are nice and big (not so common in southern AB!). Most of Calgary is pretty safe I think, just the East end of town *can* be a little scary. But Bankfiew is the other end of town. It's close to 17th Avenue and Marda Loop, you're pretty well close to everything you could want - and a lot of the people there are 20's/30's, so that's kind of nice.

And Kate - I'm surprised you aren't finding many places here to live, with school just letting out. I've got a (dirt cheap) basement suite close to SAIT/U of C, there should be lots opening up in the area over the next week (or two..). I will keep my eyes open for RENT signs, and give you addresses/phone numbers (even an idea of what the place looks like) on here. Well... maybe I'll email you with the specifics!

Your timing is good (both of you), not sure if you've heard but there are all sorts of festivals in the summer here. And the Stampede - bit busy/expensive for me, but hey. Calgary doesn't have much of a reputation for arts & entertainment but the scene certainly does exist here, and there is some fantastic international cuisine. Although I'm sure we don't compare to Vancouver's seafood, you shouldn't go hungry!

Thank you so much Emm!! I have been stressing about moving into a horrible neighbourhood but after hearing your advice I'm sure I'll be just fine. I'm coming from Toronto where there are some seriously bad neighbourhoods (many, many guns) and I didn't want to end up anywhere similar once in Calgary.

I can not wait to get out there! I know I'll be just in time for the Stampede, which isn't really my thing either, but have heard that it's one of those events that you should see at least once in your life. When in Rome...

Kate - I have been using websites to find apartments and depending on your price range, some are not too bad. Try these if you haven't already -
www.gscrentals.com
www.bwalk.com/rental/calgary/default.asp - more expensive but most allow pets for a small one time fee ($200 normally)

If either of you spot any great 1 bedrooms anywhere, I'm open to other neighbourhoods...feel free to send the details my way too please! Thanks!

Haven't seen any signs yet, but here is a good resource. Again, I recommend the West end (except for Bridgeland, Renfrew, Mountainview, Mayland Heights and a few other areas - they're NE but nice areas). If you find anything that looks good and want to know how central it is or whatever, feel free to ask me. I would say that I know the city pretty well. I'm e.mcneill@hotmail.com
