Someone please help, My mom got sucked into this scam and she's on disability.
From Ontario Mississauga. They came to our door and lied about smart meters, told my mother she had to sign some contract for her electricity bill or else she'll be charged more money. They are taking 3x more now on every bill and she's on disability. I called the electricity company (enersource)and complained about it, they kept talking about the government wants to introduce a smart meter system that will charge us more money and that this protection plan she's paying over $100 is a security, etc. I complained to them why the hell are they charging people for a protection plan 2 years before the government is introducing a smart meter? what if she wants to opt out of this contract? they said she'd have to pay $800 so they could recover their losses.

I was approached by a sales rep from UE this evening. I did show the sales rep a copy of the utility bill but did not sign on the application form. Even so, I am not feeling comfortable about this as I am concern that they can forge the signature? What are my options now? Do I need to call UE to get a cancellation number? Not sure if I can do this as I did not sign anything and I do not have any application number to quote to the customer service.
I am planning to just call my local provider to let them know not to switch my account over to other company. What else do I need to do in order to ensure that I am entering into a contract that I did not sign on? |

...A goon eh? Untill ANY of you show me some hard proof that what im going for is a scam (which there isnt any), or know what your talking about (which you dont) just stop talking. 90% of the people who complain are either from diffrent insurance compeditors, who dont get paid as well so they get angry or people who didnt make the cut.
They only hire 3% of the people they interview, and to honest, your dealing with people everyday, just because you have customer service down on your resume doesnt make you a people person. It just allows you deal with people yelling at you, which few do.
The people Ail sees, are union members who WANT to be seen. No cold calling, no door to door. You walk in, you say heres your options, they say i dont want thoes options, you say fine heres your benifits, have a nice day. and your out of there.
The stuff altig provides is amazing for the premiums. in fact its great for what you get. And before you go off running saying im a "goon hired by altig/AIL" I'm still writing the exam, which is the hardest exam you will EVER take. Another reason why people hate it.
CNN, the BBB and various other companies have looked into AIL/Altig and found NO evedince of ANY sort of scam.
$397 goes toward the Licensing course (LLQP) and the other $312 pays for your training during and after you pass the exam.
its not for everyone, let me clear that up now, people who havent made the cut can go broke. but its no ones fault but their own. Its a home study program which your mentor helps you with and everything in the job is under YOUR control after training. Booking, apointments, hours, who you train, everything. the amount of money you make is souly dependant on how hard you work. Plus you can retire after 10 years with a steady paycheck.
Find me an article written by CNN, the BBB or some other reputable company, that shows its a scam and then you can start throwing accusations around. |

I recently got scammed into signing one of their applications at the door just to get them away. Feeling pretty dumb about it now. Anyways, I've received two phone calls to "reaffirm" the contract but I've told them I wasn't ready to proceed both times. I finally had a chance to look into it and found this site and read into their tactics. I called them this morning to cancel and really got the run around. Finally they cancelled my application but HUNG UP before I could get a confirmation number. I called back and basically was told some bull about technical difficulties and that the cancellation number wasn't available. I was very persistance and the rep finally let up and gave me A number... but based on their overall dishonesty, I am questioning whether it is the right number. I then emailed them to reconfirm my cancellation and to request my bill back.
For those of you who've cancelled before what is the format of the cancellation number for UE? I was given my application number (that is on the signed application from the door) with a "C" at the end. Is this the same for those of you who've successfully cancelled? |

I question that one too, about UE agreeing to reduce your rates. Last year, I switched my hydro to BullFrog Power. It was a conscious choice, as I want to do more for the environment and use green power. I pay 8.9 cents/kwh. I know this is more than what Toronto Hydro charges, but it is for the environment. What I don't understand is that UE charges even more than that, and locks you in for that same high rate, and it's not green electricity. BullFrog actually lowered my rate last year (from 9.2/kwh), and as more windmills come online, the prices will drop even more. When the UE guy came to our door last month, he completely criticizedBullfrog, and even told my husband that they were a fly-by-night company, they charge too much, and they wouldn't be around much longer. Funny coming from a company that scams people they way they do! At least if I decide I don't want to be with Bullfrog any more, I can just cancel my contract, no penalty and go back to Toronto Hydro. That's what a respectable company should do. Bullfrog is gaining huge momentum through positive word of mouth and they are building fantastic loyalty. That's a lot more than I can say for Universal Energy! |

Hi, i used to work at UE before. What i dont understand is how shallow some of the people i talked to were, why would you not, want to save money. UE allows reduces your prices if the market prices reduce. what you guys are looking for, is short term instead of longterm/ |

Hi there,
We signed with them about 2 years ago when we had both electricity and gas which made sense at the time. We have since moved to a house that only has electricity and our bill is ridiculous and it doesn`t even amount to the fixed rate we were promised
I have emailed them asking how much it would cost to cancel our contract
who knows what will happen now! |

Don't listen to amazed! He's just a goon they hired and he can't get anyone to come in for an interview because of sites like these that warn people ahead of time, that's why he's so bitter.
About the money. They ask you to pay upfront $709 (in Edmonton, AB anyways). $397 goes to the Licensing course and the rest... which is $312 goes into their pockets! Yes, that's right, they pocket YOUR hard earned money!
Amazed, why didn't you mention that part, ay? I used to work there and I know that they are nothing less than a scam! Many people went bankrupt because of this company. amazed, it sounds like you only started working there and got blinded by their smoke screen. I truly do wish you the best of luck, but when things go wrong, and they will, don't say I didn't warn you.
The company names they use are AIL, American Income or Altig. Beware people!
If you need more info on this scam of a company, feel free to email me at jtrudeau2000@hotmail.com. |

Hello, i as well have unknowingly fallen for this scam, as litterally i didnt know until i was informed 8 months later that i was contracted with them and because i am a student and cancelled my utilities and moving for the summer, was told i owe 1261.61 for the cancellation fee with Universal Power.
apparently my housemate signed the papers from the door to door sales person just to get him to leave (because i was away at work) as well as apparently confirmed over the phone (because again i was at work) even tho all utilities are under my name and not hers.
i remember recieving that 25 dollar cheque in the mail and by signing it is signing into the contract, so naturally i tore it up and threw it away, not thinking anything about it at the time, now i have a credit recovery company coming after me from universal power saying i owe the 1261.61
im looking for any help or others experience that could get rid of this rediculous charge i wasnt even aware of, i have phoned them and requested that any copy of signed documents or contract and the recorded phone conversation be emailed to me but have received nothing yet. i am planning on going to my university free legal aid and seeing what can be done, or if i will need a lawyer.
thanks anyone that can help |

Universal Energy is the worst company. they trick people into signing long term contracts with all their biased crap about energy prices going up. When in the end, it comes to how much money the stupid fat bald head of the company makes and stupid sales rep who is always scouting from door to door for the next innocent victim. i don't know who'd work for such a scam company and even if they do get decent commission, could they sleep at night knowing they spend the hard earned money of canadians all over. Decent hard working people with the least amount of moral will never work for such a scam company and all the scam artists that makes up that pyramid. hope you go bankrupt! |

You haven't heard from me in a while; you probably thought I was busy working three jobs and/or selling my internal organs in order to pay for some exorbitant Early Termination Fees, right?
Well, guess what? I got out.
After many, many, many months of Universal Power's objectionable tactics, duplicate e-mail responses and tedious form letters from “Nino Silvestri” (does this guy actually exist? David Menzies doesn't think so, either)…
http://www.marketingmag.ca/magazine/current/letters_to_editor/article.jsp?content=20071029_70462_70462#
It's over.
Just like I said it would be.
Universal Power made a mistake with me (besides underestimating my tenacity), and they may have made the same mistake with some of you. Their mistake? They didn't send me a written copy of the Terms and Conditions Agreement.
Read on…
After being a Universal victim for seven months, I realized that I hadn't been provided with any sort of paperwork from Universal, which I found strange. I e-mailed them, explaining, and requesting a copy. First they told me that the rep that came to my door would have left me a copy when he signed me up, but he hadn't. Then, they told me that the written agreement was on the back of the Application that I'd signed at the door, but it wasn't. I still had the signed Application; it was blank on the back. Nice try, though.
Once the Terms and Conditions Agreement arrived in the mail, I read through it carefully. Section 17 states: “…this Agreement will cease to have effect unless Universal delivers to you, a written copy of this Agreement within 40 days after you sign it, and unless you reaffirm…”
Furthermore, Section 18, Your Rights under the Consumer Protection Act, states: “You may cancel this agreement at any time during the period that ends ten (10) days after the day you receive a written copy of the agreement. You do not need to give the supplier a reason for cancelling during this 10-day period.”
Regardless of whether or not I had reaffirmed the Agreement by phone, I hadn't been given a copy of the Terms and Conditions Agreement at the door, and none was sent by mail afterward (within 40 days or otherwise), and when I finally did get my copy, I cancelled within the 10-day period after receiving it. Just like it says in Universal's own Agreement.
My argument was that since the written copy wasn't sent to me, the Agreement ceased to be in effect. Barring that, I was still within my 10-day period after receipt of the written copy. Either way, the Agreement was cancelled.
Naturally, Universal Power dismissed my letters and e-mails, choosing to reply only with repetitious form letters and irrelevant, badly-written e-mail responses, probably meant to frustrate me. It was annoying, but I didn't give in. I responded calmly but firmly, in fastidious detail, keeping track of, and noting, everything.
It became obvious that Universal Power meant to be obtuse, so I began looking for outside assistance in dealing with my situation. When Hydro One couldn't/wouldn't do anything for me, I contacted the OEB.
http://www.oeb.gov.on.ca/
When the OEB seemed indifferent, I even wrote to Silverman Helps and to Pat Foran at CTV; they didn't respond.
Then, I sent a report to the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services.
http://www.gov.on.ca/mgs/en/ConsProt/STEL02_045922.html
…perhaps it was just the timing, but after getting in touch with the Ministry, the OEB seemed to have a renewed interest in my case; this time though, the response came from a higher-up representative than the ones I'd dealt with previously.
I am currently in my third month of Universal-Free hydro billing. Each month, when I tear open that bill, my eyes fall to the electricity supply line, and I breathe a sigh of relief.
…and I smile, knowing I've been vindicated.
After going through this maddening episode, I have three pieces of advice to offer in dealing with these types of situations:
Keep detailed records. Any contact you have with Universal, put it in writing. Get their responses in writing. If they call you, refuse to speak to them by phone; tell them you wish to communicate by mail or e-mail. Save every letter and message.
Keep pressing Universal. Don't accept form letters, and don't accept ill-informed, useless e-mail replies from lackeys. Make your point, then make it again, and pursue it. Persist. If they don't answer your questions, ask them again, and keep asking. Don't give up; that's what they want.
Keep asking for help from outside organizations, even when things seem bleak – you never know what may trigger a response from a consumer advocate or watchdog agency.
Following are some related websites/forums/blogs, etc. that I hope will be found useful, in keeping with your situations. Some of them are a little dated, but you will see that Universal is running their little game all across the country, and has pulled the wool over the eyes of all manner of unsuspecting consumers. If nothing else, some of the blogs and posts are wildly funny:
