This happened to me last Sunday. Guy shows up and says "on behalf of my provider" even shows me a bill that is from the same company I used. Hands me a regristation letter, I sign not knowing because he made it sound like he is confirming that my prices won't go up.
I then sent them a fax the same day indicating I did not want it. I also send them a register letter, email and called them saying I am not interested. I also said that I am recording the conversation . This is all within 7 days..I get the cooling off period..which is still not over.
I hope I am in the clear? |

Yes...the girl I talked to last night indicated that they received a letter and fax from me stating to cancel my application...I'd just sleep easier at night knowing I had proof of this cancellation.... |

Ontario A Have Not Province
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi folks,
Copying everyone on the May email sent to each of the 107 MPPs and various newspapers in Ontario.
Regards,
Bill Nafziger
Ontario is a “Have Not Province” for Seniors with Locked-in Pensions.
During 1999, MPPs in Ontario and Saskatchewan discussed the consequences of locked-in pensions for their retirees.
Dalton McGuinty eloquently expressed the unfairness of locked-in pensions, commenting on Ontario Seniors as “getting down on their bended knee asking for their own pension money”, as evidenced in the 1999 Hansard.
The discussions in Ontario resulted in 61 MPPs of all parties unlocking their pensions in 2000, but denying the same right to all other Ontarians with locked-in pensions.
Saskatchewan's decision in 2002 was to unlock 100% of their locked-in pensions for their retirees.
"There'll be no restrictions on the amount of withdrawal that can come out," says David Wild, superintendent of pensions.
"Anyone with a locked-in retirement account will have the option of moving monies to a RRIF [registered retirement income fund] at retirement. Anyone who already has a LIF or an LRIF in Saskatchewan will have that money in a RRIF immediately. So the LIF and LRIF will no longer exist."
According to Wild, retirees, financial planners and financial institutions had become "frustrated" with LIF and LRIF rules in the last four years.
On a technical basis, he says, they couldn't plan ahead because maximum withdrawals from LIFs and LRIFs change according to market conditions. Also, many found the formulas for calculating maximums complicated. On a philosophical level, Wild says regulators "received complaints, such as 'I'm a responsible adult. Who is the government to tell me how much money I can withdraw from my own LIF or LRIF?'"
Ontario reacted six years later in 2008, unlocking an insulting 25% of locked-in pensions.
Ontario locked-in pension holders paid between $5.2 and $15.6 million in financial hardship application fees, to the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO) over a three year period (2003 to 2006) to reject only 53 out of over 26,000 applicants. Taxpayers paid for additional remaining costs.
Ontario continues to require these huge costs, to support a full-time department at FSCO , whose sole objective, is to determine which pensioners can have access to more of their own money.
Saskatchewan pensioners and taxpayers paid nothing, as their government allowed pensioners the flexibility to determine their own income streams.
Saskatchewan moved past the “age of government paternalism” in 2002, which continues to exist in Ontario in 2008.
Perhaps this is another reason why Ontario is moving towards a “Have Not Province”.
Best regards,
Bill Nafziger

Now I'm a little worried. I called again tonight to reaffirm my cancellation. The girl on the other end of the line informed me that my account was cancelled. I informed her that I had a cancellation number (from the first time I called) as well and she stated that that cancellation number is only the id number of the first guy I talked to. I asked to have written confirmation of my account being cancelled and she said that they don't do that....I'm a little concerned that something fishy is up...but she did state that the account was cancelled and that conversation is recorded...so I hope I'm good. Never before has a social networking site shared their revenues with their users. Decide for your self but building in Zen Zuu will make you money.
Zen Zuu is the newest Social Network site (like Facebook, MySpace), except there is a big difference, they are sharing their advertising revenues with us to help them build a database (80%). Take a look and you decide. I can tell you that I have had a great time and have built a group of new friends faster in 1 week than it took me six months in Facebook.

Hi ontarioenergysavingsmya$$:
I agree - I am a success story, however, I don't know that I have all the answers! It certainly sounds like you have covered all the bases. I was going to send Universal Energy a registered letter, and if I recall, I never ended up sending it. (just got too busy at work that week). I recall faxing it in, but never got around to actually mailing by registered mail. I think if you have the cancellation number, you are good to go. In the end, it wouldn't hurt to send by registered mail or courier (probably one or the other, not both). When this all happened to me, I sent my e-mail on day 9 (in the evening, after business hours!), not day 2 like you are doing - I was really concerned that if I hit day 10, I would be locked in. In the end, I was okay.
Good luck, and keep us posted on how it goes. |

nadjam - You seem to know a lot about this...hope you can help...
I too have fallen victim to this scam. The hydro is in my financee's name and I just signed as I thought this was just an application (she was away). To make a long story short...the Ontario Energy Savings rep came to my door last night (around 7-8pm). That night I emailed the company stating I wanted to cancel. This morning I also faxed them the same letter stating my desire to cancel my application. I also called them this morning, and lucky enough, got a cancellation number. My plan tonight is to ship a letter (with cancellation #) reaffirming my desire to cancel. I will be sending this letter via registered mail and courrier. I will state in this letter that I wish writting confirmation of my cancellation. With the letters and fax, I also send them a photocopied version of the application/agreement to ensure they cancel the correct appliction.
I'll also resend an email and fax with the cancellation number.
nadjam...Do you believe I have covered all areas? You are a success story and I'd also like to be one. I believe I have acted fast and I hope this will save me. I thank you for any possible information anyone could provide. Many thanks[This post edited by ontarioenergysavingsmya$$ on 29 April 2008 ] [This post edited by ontarioenergysavingsmya$$ on 29 April 2008 ] [This post edited by ontarioenergysavingsmya$$ on 29 April 2008 ] |

quoting: angry_student Hi there,
can anyone help me and let me know if there is a way to get out of the contract with Universal Power? I am a student and unknowingly I locked myself into Universal Power's contract for 5 years. Now that school is almost over our household is trying to cancel the account because everyone is moving out. However, I found out that if I want to cancel the account I have to pay $1200 dollars and if I dont then my credit rating will get screwed up. Is that true?? Can Universal Power actually screw up ones credit rating? I dont work and have no means of paying that amount, but my credit rating is pretty good and i dont want to destroy it..Can anyone give me an answer..
Thanks in advance
READ YOUR CONTRACT.........IT SAYS IF YOU ARE MOVING SOMEWHERE WHERE THEY CAN'T SUPPLY POWER THEN THEY WILL CACELL...... SO MOVE BACK HOME WITH MOM AND DAD! THAT SHOULD WORK. MAKE SURE WHEN YOU CALL, DOCUMENT WHO YOU SPOKE TO (ID #), TIME.......... AND EXPLAIN AND ASK IF THERE WILL BE ANY FEES TO CANCEL....... FOR SURE THEY WILL SAY NO.... SAY THANK YOU...... AND ABOUT 2 WEEKS LATER, YOU WILL RECEIVE A NOTICE IN THE MAIL SAYING YOU OWE A CRAP LOAD OF MONEY........ YOU WILL THEN NEED TO WRITE THEM A LETTER EXPLAINING THAT YOU DON'T NEED THERE SERVICES ANYMORE AS YOU ARE MOVING IN WITH MOMMMY AND DADDY....YOU MIGHT HAVE TO GIVE ADDRESS..... AND SAY DO NOT CONTACT YOU ANYMORE AS THIS WILL BE CONSIDERED TO BE HARRASSEMENT......
GOOD LUCK

Hi Everybody;
I just thought that I would let everybody know that the 50 plus site has opened up a forum strictly on pensions. It would be a good place to check out if you have questions on any pensions as hopefully some one there will respond and help you out.

I applied for some electrical jobs, and these people called me. I hadnt heard of them, and some of the jobs posted dont have company names listed. But still, American Income doesnt sound like an electrical company. I thought maybe parent company. I asked what position I applied for, and she said "we don't know based on resume's what positions are being requested" or something along those lines. So, I gave her a generic response about working in the trades and she said that this was a management/marketing position, wished me luck, and that was it. I was still very puzzled so I did a quick google search and lo and behold I find this post. Very interesting! |

Amazed... I get what you are saying. Yes you have to pay and keep up with licencing and commision isn't something to stick one's nose up at, but when I go for an interview, and I watch the interviewer praying on young, naive people, who like most don't want to work at mc donalds, I see that as a concern. |

A Letter on Deaf ears
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Everybody;
Well here is another letter sent out to a government that doesn't really care what the people of Ontario want.
Apparently all they want to do is line their pockets. After voting them selves a 35% raise just before Christmas , they are lining their pockets again with another raise. They are the highest paid MPP's in Canada.
Maybe that is why they refuse to unlock our money.
They need that money when each senior passes away and they tax their estate at the highest rate so that they will be able to keep their pockets full of money.
Hon Dalton McGuinty; ???????
Dear Dalton ;
As you may have noticed . The Federal Government is now going to allow the unlocking of 50% of Federal Locked-in pensions in Canada.
This means that well over 50% of the Citizens of Canada will have a privilege that is being denied to the Citizens of Ontario.
Federal 50% , Alberta 50% , Saskatchewan 100% , Manitoba 50% ,((( Ontario 25% )))
I have heard that British Columbia is also considering unlocking 50%.
Your past Finance Minister Greg Sorbara during a interview concerning locked-in pensions in answer to the Question
" Do senior citizens really need protection from unscrupulous investors?"
On a CBC Radio interview Stated .
" I don't think that this has any thing to do with protecting senior citizens from investors whether unscrupulous or not. "
Your Now Current Finance Minister Dwight Duncan now States . " the Ontario government is concerned that full unlocking of locked-in accounts could put retirement income at risk. The rational is simple , these funds are important in ensuring that seniors are provided with a regular income stream throughout retirement despite the uncertainty of an individuals life expectancy , future investment ,returns and inflation."
It appears that your Finance Ministers answers depend on is if there is a election or not.
Before a election Your government isn't concerned if a Senior is capable of looking after their own funds . ((( I would like to remind you this is our own funds )))
Now that the election is over Your government is saying in a nice way that only the Seniors in Ontario are to Stupid to look after their ((( OWN FUNDS ))) Not government money !!!
We were smart enough to save money for retirement. We are also smart enough to use it and invest it wisely.
PEOPLE AND ORGANIZATIONS THAT SUPPORT UNLOCKING LOCKED IN PENSIONS 100% .
Jack M. Mintz Professor Of Business Economics ,Rotman School of Management ,
Malcolm Hamilton,Actuary ,Mercer Human Resource Consulting Toronto ,
Gordon Pape , Renowned Financial Expert ,
One Thousand Eight Hundred Signatures on the online Petition that has requested that the Government of Ontario Unlock LIRF , LIRA , LIF 100%
CD Howe Institute , Canadian Economic And Social Policy Think Tank,
CARP , National Advocacy Organization For The 50 Plus , 250,000 members in Ontario ,
The Common Front For Retirement Security , 2 Million Members across Canada .
The Ontario Coalition of Independent Locked-in Fund Holders ,
Ontario Coalition of Senior Citizens Organizations.
My Question Is why does the Liberal Government of Ontario Refuse to unlock Locked-in Pensions 100 %.
Especially when A good Number of Current Liberal MPP'S will enjoy this Privilege at the age of 55 or when they retire.

hey everyone:
i'm still trying to figure out if my situation is the scam it seems to be, as i have all the same things happening for me (door to door canvasser, quardrupled energy bills, etc.), except for two things: 1) my possible scammer is Ontario Energy Savings L.P. and 2) my bills have quadrupled because my usage has APPARENTLY quadrupled, though there has been no drastic lifestyle/energy consumption change over the past few months other than Toronto winter. i'm just wondering how your all's bills have increased drastically: is it price per usage unit, or the usage, or both? thanks a lot.
