I have to say that the friends I've known the longest in my life time now have the *misplaced belief* that this history gives them some sort of right to just "let them fly" when we get together.

This leads to a HORRIBLE breathing experience when we hang out.

Is this just my unluckiness? Or do other people have the same problem with their friends?

Yes, you need a land line to run ADSL, and if you make *any* phone calls that are long distance, or during the day, it's better to have a land line. I think.

Yes it is, though it's also several years old.

But you would not be

in this bed
that has become much too warm
for July
without you

instead

Our parrot
has drowned
in our bath

and I have taken a concern
with the cat
that we still have
yet to name

Though I could suggest
names
many many names
that would apply

But would you come home

so I could tell you
how it rained
last night

and filled
our bath

1.

Every year the frozen lake
is cut open and dragged off to sit in storage.

Underground and musty
it will survive most of the summer
before it soaks away into the roughhew of the floor
or is taken back up into the light
and melted in iceboxes
that steal its cold.

2.

My father cuts and weighs the ice for our town
bundles it in brown freight paper and straw
and carries it in the back of a clapboard
to homestead after homestead.

On these trips
the bottom of the wagon creaks
under the ice which drips its wet
into the prairie brown.

In the rainy season the roads
no more then beaten tracks
will turn to a black mud
that quicksands the wheels.

But today he travels quickly
leaving a new path of green growth
that races tall with the new found fallen moisture.

3.

A Christmas of Chinooks
and my father with the men from town
are on the lake cutting.

Around them there are horses
harnessed to drag the great blocks
their hooves biting into the gravel the men have scattered before them
and there are dogs ranging from edge to edge
searching for the scent of a winter hare.

My mother along with several other women
are on the shore edge
preparing lunch and insuring the fire
that will be needed to thaw the hands of their husbands
too proud to admit their fingers grow cold and purple
from the labour.

When in the wind I hear the dogs panic and go mad
become aggressive and snap at the wind
tearing their very breath into pieces that fall to the ground.

And as I turn towards the ice
I hear the men with their voices shrill and broken
clawing fear and downfall
from the backs of their throats.

For a large quarter horse
with a front leg snapped on the ice
and the hindquarters disappeared into the hell
of lake froth and razor cold
has broken though the freeze and thaw of a Chinook ice cover.

There in the middle of the lake
it struggles with mad reflexive kicks towards the silt bottom
riding it's chest against the ice
ripping open brown velvet skin
which bleeds everything and the lightly falling snow
with thick gelding red.

And as the ice becomes more unstable
the men stand unable and incapable
watching without alternative
as the horse tires
grows cold and sinks below the hoar surface
screaming falsetto
in the same tongue as my own.

4.

It is only early summer
and the iceshed is empty.

There is no luck in cutting for storage
blood and water
to cool the icebox.
