quoting: angry_student Hi there,
can anyone help me and let me know if there is a way to get out of the contract with Universal Power? I am a student and unknowingly I locked myself into Universal Power's contract for 5 years. Now that school is almost over our household is trying to cancel the account because everyone is moving out. However, I found out that if I want to cancel the account I have to pay $1200 dollars and if I dont then my credit rating will get screwed up. Is that true?? Can Universal Power actually screw up ones credit rating? I dont work and have no means of paying that amount, but my credit rating is pretty good and i dont want to destroy it..Can anyone give me an answer..
Thanks in advance
READ YOUR CONTRACT.........IT SAYS IF YOU ARE MOVING SOMEWHERE WHERE THEY CAN'T SUPPLY POWER THEN THEY WILL CACELL...... SO MOVE BACK HOME WITH MOM AND DAD! THAT SHOULD WORK. MAKE SURE WHEN YOU CALL, DOCUMENT WHO YOU SPOKE TO (ID #), TIME.......... AND EXPLAIN AND ASK IF THERE WILL BE ANY FEES TO CANCEL....... FOR SURE THEY WILL SAY NO.... SAY THANK YOU...... AND ABOUT 2 WEEKS LATER, YOU WILL RECEIVE A NOTICE IN THE MAIL SAYING YOU OWE A CRAP LOAD OF MONEY........ YOU WILL THEN NEED TO WRITE THEM A LETTER EXPLAINING THAT YOU DON'T NEED THERE SERVICES ANYMORE AS YOU ARE MOVING IN WITH MOMMMY AND DADDY....YOU MIGHT HAVE TO GIVE ADDRESS..... AND SAY DO NOT CONTACT YOU ANYMORE AS THIS WILL BE CONSIDERED TO BE HARRASSEMENT......
GOOD LUCK

THIS IS NOT A SCAM. You signed a contract that you did not take the time to read.
it cost me $831.00 to get out of my contract. SUCKED TO BE ME!!
Do some math and you will see how much you will be paying if you don't pay.

you will pay about 76% more. I can use my rates as an example: I am paying 5.5 and you will be paying about 9,6. so if your bill is 200...expect to pay about $352.00. I had to pay $831 in early cancelation fees................. good luck!

Be careful as when you are married, you are both in responsible for the contract. I tried the same thing, told them we are getting divorced and they stuck it to me. So I paid the $781 cancellation fee.......... we signed a contract.......sucks to be us......... never again and hopefully I helped one person, it was well worth it!
Best of luck and keep us posted on your cancelation!!!

quoting: packrat67 I am in the same boat...but have had them for 1 1/2 years and just got out by pretending I moved and putting my hydro in another name. I received my August hydro bill.....$459.72 for one month, and I don't have air conditioning. That was the final straw. Besides dying or falling off the face of the planet, they make you feel like they have you by the you-know-whats. The thing is, the hydro bill has always been in my name, but my husband signed up with them, so his name is on the contract. Go figure how that would be binding. Once you break your contract, either by moving or some other circumstance, they send you threatening letters that say if you don't contact them within a certain amount of time, they will forward your account info to their legal department, and you will be responsible for their costs of any litigation. Yeah, I'm sure this scares alot of people into getting in touch with them. I recently moved and thought that I would be done with them....not the case. After freaking out over my last bill and calling Ontario Hydro (Hydro One Networks), I explained my situation. I asked what my electricity charge only would have been if I didn't have Universal Gouger....she told me the info I needed to figure it out....Hydro One rates are 5.3 cents/KWH for the first 600kwh, anything over 600, the rate is 6.2 cents. So I did the math.....my electricity charge (no debt retirement charge or transportation charge, just straight electricity), had I not been with Universal Gouger would have been $160.21........my charge with Universal Gouger was $280.71. Now you tell me how it is that they didn't break the terms of the contract when they didn't save me all of this money that they professed they were going to save me when they came to my door? They charged me 10.4 cents/KWH. So last month, I called Hydro One again, and they were very sympathetic....I did a disconnect, paid a $31.00 charge, and put the bill in a different name so it would appear like there is a new owner. WELL WELL WELL, guess who called today.....(11days later), Universal Gouger. I have spoke to a lawyer already and thankfully since the name of my husband has never appeared on the hydro bill, and he is the one who signed the contract, I am good to go. Their next phone call or letter to me will have them being advised that they are harassing me and I will bring a lawsuit against them. However, there are thousands out there (I know of 7 alone just where I work), who feel or are trapped. If enough people did this (change the name on the bill), Universal Gouger wouldn't have a hope in hell. Oh, and don't even bother calling the Ontario Energy Board, what a waste of our tax dollars that is, I can't even believe people get paid to say "I can't help you, you're stuck". Bull, our government needs to step in and kick these morons to the curb. I tell everyone I know, DO NOT LET THEM IN YOUR HOME!!!!! They are very very bossy, will demand to see your energy bill, etc. Pick up the phone, and in front of their mini manipulators, dial 911, or pretend to, and say you have someone harassing you at your door, trying to get in. Believe me, they will go. Please please please pass this on to everyone you know....we have to get these companies out of here!!!!!

You can try this..................
call and inform them you are moving to a house that is "all inclusive". Something like with your parents: ask them if there is anything you must do. Then wait about 1 month then cancell your hydro bill. Put it into somebody else name. About 2-3 weeks after this happens, they will send you a notice of "early termination". Fax it back with a letter stating you want your contract cancelled and according to the rules on your contract it can be cancelled if you can't supply the hydro as it's not in your name. Mentioned that you called "last month" to inform them of the change and remind them that they record it all. Then say at the end: Again, please cancell my contract # xxxxxx and do not contact me again as I will be in contact with the OBE.
Try this........ might help........ worst that can happen is you pay the cancelation fee........
Look back in the posts and someone posted steps you can take to get them to send you the information ...........
good luck.......

NEW WAY TO GET SUCKED IN!!!!
I received a check in the mail for $100.00. If I endorse it, I am "comited to the contract". WOW... can you imagine how many desperate people are getting sucked in.
What really pisses me off the most is HOW DID THEY GET MY NAME AND ADDRESS! Are they paying my local gas company for this information?
What will they do next? Sign up and get free beer............. or a blow job!
Sorry, I am a tad pissed off especially after I paid $831 in early termination fees from this retarded company!

They will never get shut down........... they are in it to make money and like they did with me ($831) cancelation fee.......... they will keep knocking at doors until everyone says no! But they still get suckers like me and you. You have 2 options: option 1: Pay out the remainder of your term.....
or option 2: This is from a Vancouver forum
OK, I called the Ontario Energy Board and they gave me specific questions to ask Universal Energy. You have to send a registered letter or fax (keep the transmittal showing date/time it was sent) and Universal Energy has 35 days (not business days) to respond.
Tell them you have contacted the OEB and ask them for:
1. A copy of the signed contract and to point out the calculation of the penalty clause. Ask them to calculate the penalty to get out of the contract as per the terms and conditions.
2. Ask them for a copy of the telephone call where you verbally confirmed your agreement. This cannot be a paper copy, but must be a CD of the actual conversation.
They have 35 days to respond and if they don't respond in this time frame, call the OEB back who will intervene.
Good luck to all.

so, what is going on with the letter??? I bet not much! My lawyer looked at my contract and said......... you signed, you confirmed.... you are stuck.
This is why I take time out of my day to educate people about this. They were in my NEIGHBOURHOOD yesterday and I was talking to someone who they approached. They really do mislead people but again......... if you do any kind of research, you will see that there is NO benefit of signing up for this "service".

This is not a scam!!!! This is YOU not educating yourself!
They sell hydro at 9.9 ckwh and they make it sound like it's the best thing since Pamela Anderson............. and usually we bite like I did!
Here are some facts that I should of looked into before doing this and confirm
http://www.tbhydro.on.ca/pages/residential/rates.htm
Rates effective May 1, 2007
Electricity Charges
This is the cost of electricity supplied to you. The electricity used is multiplied by the adjustment factor (4.57%), which accounts for electricity lost through wires and equipment before it gets to your home.
5.3 cents/kWh for first 600 kWh* used monthly
6.2 cents/kWh on all remaining 1,000 kWh monthly

Remember you fought the HTA....... this is a business who is trying to make money........ and they covered there buts really good! NOT worth it..... if you do win, make sure you let us how you did and if you loose, let us know how many thousands you lost............
quoting: Spousegottook We also got taken by the UEC crooks and also by Summitt Energy who are a sloppy version of UEC from my experience. I've actually stopped paying the bills until this is resolved but sadly I don't know if I have a legal leg to stand on as they've sent me copies of the reaffirmation calls. As others here noted these are cleverly worded to get you to commit to the five year contracts whereas you think you are confirming the sales agent gave you all the right information at the door. Now I'm looking at paying to cancel collectively four (hydro & gas x2) contracts my spouse unwittingly signed us up for. I was considering legal action but given what others have written it sounds like a waste of time (and money). Are there any tactics one can use in the law suit that would make the likes of these crooks settle at the 11th hour? I'm thinking to subpoena everyone at UEC I can attach a name to. Some of which I'm sure are no longer in their employ and wouldn't even show up to court. This tactic seemed to work when I fought an HTA charge years ago. I'm not a lawyer so I don't know how realistic this would be.

Sad.......but if you wait toooo long, they will get more of your money... so I recomend after going to see a lawyer to pay the early cancelation fee! Unless they missled you or forged your signature, you are done! Let it be a lesson learn....EDUCATE YOURSELF BEFORE SIGNING SOMETHING THAT SOUNDS TOOOOOO GOOOOOD TO BE TRUE!!!

WOW... here I am still uspset over the fact that I had to pay over $800 in early cancelation fees less then 5 months ago. Yesterday, guess who was knocking at my door........... an agent from Universal energy. He was so lucky that I was not home and my wife was the one who opened the door. She said he was really pushy and she had to repeat 3 times "NO THANK YOU, Pleaese leave!". I must say that my wife was really nice about it and I said I am coming home to teach him a lesson and she reminded me that it's not his fault..............and she was right!
REMEBER.............. SAY NO TO UNIVERSAL ENERGY IF YOU WANT TO SAVE MONEY!

Yes I agree......some of us did not know! But now I am taking the time to educate people and companies like this will not survive!
Remember that knowledge is power!
quoting: gasbillhell quoting: UniversalLover Here are some questions straight from UEC. This should clear up anything:
Who is Universal Energy Corporation?
Universal Energy Corporation is a Canadian Company. The company markets its electricity product offerings under the name Universal Power. The principals of the organization have in excess of 100 years of combined experience in the energy industry and are responsible for aggregating in excess of one million customer contracts since deregulation.
Is Universal Power licensed in Ontario?
Universal Power has been approved and licensed as an Electricity Retailer by the Ontario Energy Board (License #ER-2005-0261). Universal Power is required to follow the Code of Conduct, issued and amended by the Ontario Energy Board.
Are you affiliated with a local utility?
Universal Power is not affiliated with any Local Distribution Company (LDC).
What causes electricity prices to rise?
Electricity prices are determined by the competitive forces of supply and demand. The short-term or spot price fluctuates significantly from day to night, season to season, weekday to weekend. For instance, if one generation facility is out of service in the middle of a heat wave our demand for electricity can easily exceed our supply capacity thus having to import electricity from neighboring regions which affects the short term price of electricity.
Longer term electricity prices are determined by population and economic growth and by factors such as environmental polices.
How do I benefit by signing with Universal Power?
There is no risk of your electricity commodity price increasing during the term of this agreement. As in the past your LDC delivers your electricity and provides 24 hours, emergency service. There is no cost to enroll.
If I chose Universal Power as my supplier, will I receive my utility bill from you?
Your bill will come directly from your LDC as it has in the past. Once, your application has been accepted by Universal Power, our name will appear on your bill as your electricity supplier.
Can I cancel this agreement?
At any time from the date of entering into the Universal Power's Agreement until 10 days after receiving a written copy of the agreement. If Universal does not make delivery within 30 days after the delivery date specified in this agreement or if Universal Power does not begin performance of its obligations within 30 days after the commencement date specified in this agreement, you may cancel this agreement at any time before delivery or commencement of performance.
Man and that was all on thier website which is on the application as well as the pamphlet. You people are just dumb and lazy you deserve to get fucked lol

Howdy!!
So,has anyone found out a way to get out of the contract? For now, I strongly recomend to pay the fee as you will save lots of money in the long run! Do the math: I paid $731 for early termination fee. My first bill was about $200 more (100 extra per month). If you do the math for 5 years (60 months) you will be paying almost $6000. And remember that you get a discount at the start of the contract then it goes up about 20%. And you know what is even more funier, I got a notice in the mail saying that my price per KWH is going down! Sad that I actually was thinking these retards would save me money!!!!
GOOD LUCK!

GREAT JOB!!! Education is the best! Yes they have call display! and they track everything! They might try to call you again withing the "10 day" period so remember to say: shove it up your A$$!!!
quoting: cmonet Hi, we got a person from Universal energy at our door 2 days ago (June, 13). After a long discussion she eventually convinced us to sign an "application" and give her one of our hydro bills. After that I googled universal energy and I found this and others forums posting all the problems with them. Thanks to all you guys that posted your stories to warn us!!
So we called the day after and saying that we wanted to cancel our application but we were told that they didn't have it "in the system" yet, and that we should wait to receive a call and cancel at that time.... yes right!...
So I called again today and after being the told the same story I asked the guy to speak with a manager, he said that the manager was not there right now and when I insisted he HUNG UP on me!!! When I called again the line dropped off immediately, I guess they recognized the number!! So I called from my cellphone and I spoke with someone else, I insisted again to be cancelled immediately and to talk with a manager, at first she said it was not possible, after asking again she finally said she was going to to a cancellation for me!! This means that you can cancel immediatley don't give up if they tell you that you have to wait. So I have to give again all the info (name address, hyrdo account #.. ) and I got a cancellation, with a cancellation number. So I'll keep my radar on for any phone calls from them but I hope I got rid of them before being hooked up.
I really hated their way to do "businness" I think the government should be informed of this.
Good luck all of u,
say NO to Universal Energy!!

Just pay it, it's not worth it!! YOU SIGNED A LEAGLE BINDING CONTRACT. I learned the hard way just like you did!
quoting: Haloonie I regrettably got into the contract. I will not recount my story as I have read it over and over again.
My early termination fee is close to $800.00. Paying it now will save me an estimated $3000 in the long run. How pathetic is that?
The one thing that I feel "duped" by is this "balancing charge". I am not only paying for my usage, I am also paying for excessive usage in my "rate class". When I inquired about this I was referred back to my contract. Of course it is there, written in cryptic terms that only an industry insider can understand. Apparently they only purchase power at 90% of expected usage. Anything usage over and above that is charged on a pro-rated basis to all members in thie "rate class". No, I don't get it either.
I am interested in joining a class-action lawsuit. If anyone knows of one that has been started, please post the details.
