Hi everyone,
I'm a former employee of an energy retailer. I worked with the company for approximately 2 years and had a fairly high level position. There's a good chance I've talked with a few of you over the phone. I like to think that I was one of the few "customer focused" people there ad did all I could within the system to help you guys out. The problem was, there isn't much wiggle room once an application has been reaffirmed over the phone (at which point it becomes a binding contract, subject to early termination fees).
If you guys have any questions for a "former insider", I would be happy to help.
One point for clarification (for the Ontario market ONLY as of June 2007 - this does not apply to BC). You have more than 10 days to cancel an application. In fact, you don't ever have to "cancel" your application. If you sign at the door and UE is unable to contact you within 60 days in order to reaffirm the agreement, the application is cancelled. The burden is on UE to get you to reaffirm over the phone or via email. If they don't have a clean reaffirmation, they can not lock you in to anything. Again... this is for Ontario only (as of June 2007).
You can cancel ANYTIME before reaffirmation. You are NOT locked in after 10 days. Check the terms and conditions (the fold-out) brochure.
My advice to all those who have decided to cancel and have not yet reaffirmed...
Step 1: Call UE and inform them you have had a chance to review the material and have decided to cancel. Don't yell or scream or be combative, it's not going to help you. Be calm and friendly... it's in your best interest. Tell them that is your final decision and would like a cancellation confirmation number. No matter what they tell you, they WILL be able to generate a cancellation confirmation number for you. Their objective is to stall your cancellation as long as possible in an attempt to persuade you to change your mind. Be firm but polite. Inform them you will be sending an email immediately reiterating your cancellation request.
Step 2: Send an email requesting cancellation. Include your name, application number (red number at the top right hand corner of the application), phone #, and reason for cancellation. Keep an archive of this email.
Step 3: Breathe a sigh of relief.
The natural gas contracts aren't all that bad, but the electricity contracts are TERRIBLE. None of the employees of these companies would go near an electricity contract... especially one with "balancing charges".
